Supporting Someone Else

Guidance on helping someone else access support. Sometimes it's hard to know how to help when someone you care about is struggling.

Whether you’re a parent, partner, friend, teacher or colleague, you don’t need to have all the answers. Support often starts with noticing what’s changed and helping the person connect with the right service.

Signs someone may need support

Changes in behaviour or wellbeing can be a sign that someone may benefit from extra support.

Not every situation requires formal support, but if challenges are ongoing or affecting wellbeing, it may help to speak with a service.

You may be noticing:

  • Withdrawing from family, friends or usual activities
  • Increased conflict at home or in relationships
  • Ongoing stress, anxiety or low mood
  • Difficulties at school, work or in daily life
  • Substance use that is causing concern
  • Family separation or relationship breakdown
  • Financial stress or gambling problems

Starting the conversation

Talking about support can feel difficult. Keeping the conversation simple and supportive can help.

You might try:

  • Choosing a calm moment to talk
  • Expressing concern rather than judgement

  • Asking open questions and listening
  • Letting the person know support is available

You don’t need to solve the problem yourself. Sometimes the most helpful step is encouraging someone to talk with a professional service.
